How to Convert ISO to DSF on Mac OS, Windows [Step-by-step Guide]

It is tutorial how to convert ISO to DSF in order to playing back at audiophile apparatus or music stuff editing. Below only 1-bit audio files are discussed. After reading watch video tutorial "How to convert ISO to DSF".

General information

SACD ISO is file-container with tracks (songs) included in musical album. The file-container may contains mixes (variants) of album: stereo and/or multichannel.

Multichannel variant may be played back at multichannel system or downmixed 5.1 in 2.0 so that playback at stereo equipment or headphones.

Downmixing may be performed inline ("on fly" into player) or offline (convert ISO to DSF 2.0 - with/without downmixing - before playback via music converter). Offline stereo extraction/conversion save disk space at portable musical device's hard disk. Therefoe you can place more music at digital music player or mobile phone.

The file-container have sample rate 2.8 MHz and bit depth 1 bit sigma-delta modulation / DSD (the author have no information about higher sample rates in the containers).

The file-container's stuff may be extracted in bit-perfect mode (without altering). There is binary content the container and extracted stuff is identical. It is possible at 2.8 MHz sample rate only.

Also the container's stuff may be resampled so that playback at D128 and higher DAC or digital music player. Equipment have several playback modes (audio resolutions), that can cause individual distortion level of the each mode. Using of mode with minimal distortions, can improve sound quality. Conversion ISO to DFF is not recommended. Because DFF don't support metadata (song, album names, performer, year, artwork) standard way. Metadata may be built into DFF technically as non-standard information block. However, playback software/hardware will ignore it, as rule.

 


Preparation:

  1. Launch AuI ConverteR 48x44 (see configurations ISO to DSF)
  2. Open Settings > CD ripper/ISO tab
  3. Select stereo/multichannel track extaction from source file: check/uncheck Continuous album extraction switch
  4. Skipping pause before first track: check "Skip pause for first ISO track" switch
  5. Skipping pauses between tracks: check "Skip pause for all tracks" switch
  6. Click OK button in Settings window
  7. (Optionally) Continuous-album extraction (opera, concert, show or same ones): the main window > Parameters tab check "True gapless mode"*
  8. Binary identical (bit-perfect) extraction mode: the Settings window > General tab check "Don't make DSP ..." switch. Target sample rate must be 2.8 MHz (D64)

First extracting ISO to DSF:

  1. Open *.iso file in the conversion software.
  2. After request of downloadingsacd_extract codec, accept it
  3. Allow security rules of launching sacd_extract (under Mac)
  4. After request of downloading dff2dsf codec, accept it
  5. Allow security rules of launching dff2dsf (under Mac)

Convert ISO to DSF:

  1. Open *.iso file
  2. At main window > Album art assign album artwork file*
  3. At main window select DSF format
  4. At main window select sample rate (bit-perfect extraction at 2.8 MHz only)
  5. Dithering is ignored.
  6. Select target directory (see more in video)
  7. Push Start button
  8. Wait until end of conversion
  9. Converted stuff is placed in the target directory

Sound quality issues

If target sample rate is D128 / D256 / D512 / D1024 resampling processing is used. Resampling processing based on filtering. These firters have several settings.

At Settings > General tab:

  • Filter mode list:
  • - "Optimized resampling filter" cut frequencies upper 20 kHz (eliminating intermodulation distortions by ultrasound);
  • - "Non-Optimized resampling filter" cut frequencies upper 20...24 kHz (depend on input/output sample rates) - eliminating intermodulation distortions by ultrasound, wider signal band;
  • - "Non-Optimized wide resampling filter" cut frequencies upper 20...100 kHz (depend on input/output sample rates).
  • At some equipment sotware "Non-Optimized..." filters can cause audible noise, like here >.
  • Generally "Optimized..." filter is recommended. But you can prefer other filters settings.
  • Use minimum phase filter switch checked/unchecked minimum/linear phase filter for "Optimized resampling filter" only. Other filters use linear filters.
  • Dither work in WAV, FLAC, AIFF and other 16 bit PCM extraction only. If target resolution higher 16 bit (including 1-bit DSF format), Dither button is ignored.
